Comparison of procedures for assessing nitrogen retention in chicks.

چکیده
The nitrogen balance technique is widely used for protein metabolism studies and in this laboratory is being applied to research on interrelationships between diet and disease (Squibb, 1961). Recently, however, the experimental error resulting from N losses during N balance experiments has been stressed and the integrity of some N balance data questioned (Wallace, 1959). In this report the N retained by growing chicks, expressed as difference between N intake and excretion, is evaluated by two calculation procedures based on carcass analysis.

Effect of Dietary Xylitol on Growth Performance and Nitrogen Retention in Male Broiler Chicks during Immunological Stimulation
The effect of dietary xylitol on growth performance and nitrogen retention was studied in male broiler chicks during immunological stimulation. In experiment 1, chicks (10 day of age) were fed a corn-soybean diet containing 10% glucose or 10% xylitol with identical metabolizable energy and crude protein for 14 days. In experiment 2, ten-day-old chicks were fed 10% glucose or 6% xylitol diet for...
متن کاملThe effect of meal-feeding and food restriction on body composition, food utilization and intestinal adaptation in light-breed chicks.
The effects of feeding meals, in amounts equivalent to ad lib, intake or to 75% and 50% restriction by intubation, were studied in chicks. Growth estimated by body-weight gain and shank length was improved by tube feeding in the 50%-restricted chicks. Tube feeding increased energy retention at all feeding levels and nitrogen retention in the restricted chicks only. Body fat was increased in the...
متن کاملEffect of Calorie Intake on Nitrogen Retention in the Immature Fowl.
Munro (1951) showed that nitrogen retention in rats is reduced when calorie intake is restricted. Although an adaptive process to continued moderate calorie restriction was demonstrated with dogs (Rosenthal & Allison, 1 9 5 1 ) and man (Drury, Vaughan & Hannon, 1959), a linear relationship between N balance and the amount of carbohydrate given along with the protein of the diet was observed in ...
متن کاملEffects of Processed Castor Oil Bean (ricinus Communis L) Meal and Supplementary Dl- Methionine on Nutrient Utilization by Broiler Chicks
The effects of processed castor oil bean (Ricinus communis L) meal (CBM) and supplementary DLmethionine on nutrient retention, carcass and organ weights of broiler chicks were investigated for five weeks. Two hundred and sixteen 7-day old broiler chicks (Anak strain) were randomly divided into 12 treatment groups of 18 birds each in a 4 x 3 factorial arrangement involving four processed CBM lev...
متن کاملA New Precision–Fed Chick Assay for Determining True Metabolizable Energy Values of some Poultry Feed Ingredients for Broiler Chickens
Two experiments were conducted to determine: first, the best time of excreta collection after force feeding of broilers to yield the maximal amount of excreta, and second, nitrogen-corrected true metabolizable energy contents of some poultry feedstuffs including yellow corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, canola meal and poultry by-product meal by a new precision-fed chick assay using 3-week-o...
